Sony IMX568 CMOS Sensor
With a 2.74um pixel size, bring out details of Jupiter, Saturn, Mars, and plenty more celestial bodies! An effective pixel array of 2472 x 2064 and 12-bit AD sample depth is featured within this 5.1MP Sony IMX568 sensor. Providing incredible clarity within the images taken is the low readout noise of 1.5-2.3e and high quantum efficiency. During planetary imaging or Electronically-Assisted Astronomy (EAA), a fast frame rate is necessary to capture the best frames between our atmosphere’s seeing conditions. Thanks to the innovation from QHY, enjoy a high FPS of 64.9 in 8-bit mode or 34.5 in 16-bit mode at full 5.1MP resolution!
True Hardware Binning!
In typical CMOS cameras, the binning process utilizes algorithms to amplify the signal to noise ratio. This is done off-sensor, and works by creating a virtual pixel within software. One downside to this is that while the signal will be increased 4 times in 2x2 binning, the noise will also be doubled. To fix this inefficiency, QHY has introduced charge-domain binning (FD Binning), a feature previously only available in CCD cameras. Considered true hardware binning, this combination of pixels is done on-sensor. The result is a pure boost in signal without amplification of noise for a 4-fold increase in signal to noise ratio! Not only this, but this binning method greatly improves frame rate for high speed imaging.
Electronic Highlights
QHY has fitted this QHY5III568C with numerous inclusions to aid in transfer speeds, image quality, and photon capture. The added 512MB of memory cache ensures smooth and reliable data transfer from your camera to your computer. Buffer time is greatly reduced while helping to avoid frame drop. A global shutter greatly enhances image precision by managing a uniform exposure across the entire frame. During poor seeing conditions where the object seems to bounce around, this global shutter significantly reduces image distortion. As opposed to traditional CMOS sensors, the wires and transistors are embedded below the sensor to greatly improve sensitivity. Without these obstructions in the way, more photons can then be converted into signal.
USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type C and ST4 Guide Port
In order to prevent data loss while high speed imaging, a dependable system needs to be installed to handle the large volume of images being transferred. The onboard USB 3.2 port has a wide 5Gb bandwidth to be able to handle this type of imaging! Not only does this planetary camera excel at astrophotography, it also makes an excellent guide camera. Connect this QHY5III568C directly to your mount through the ST4 guide port to aid in tracking accuracy!
Improved Compatibility
As standard on the QHY 5III V2 series, the QHY5III568C includes a front-end design that offers increased compatibility with numerous set ups. Changeable top glass offers the ability to add filters, even with a lens! Your favorite 1.25” filters easily thread onto the top adapter of this camera, and with the 1.25” filter wheel adapter, connect it to your QHY CFW3 Small Filter Wheel. Equipped with a 1.25" CS adapter, seamlessly adjoin this planetary camera to a CS lens. You also have the option to add a second CS-C lens for C-mount lenses with the included CS to C mount adapter. Attachment to your OAG is a breeze, as the back focal distance is only 8mm!
BSI
One benefit of the back-illuminated CMOS structure is improved sensitivity. In a typical front-illuminated sensor, photons from the target entering the photosensitive layer of the sensor must first pass through the metal wiring that is embedded just above the photosensitive layer. The wiring structure reflects some of the photons and reduces the efficiency of the sensor.
In the back- illuminated sensor the light is allowed to enter the photosensitive surface from the reverse side. In this case the sensor’s embedded wiring structure is below the photosensitive layer. As a result, more incoming photons strike the photosensitive layer and more electrons are generated and captured in the pixel well. This ratio of photon to electron production is called quantum efficiency. The higher the quantum efficiency the more efficient the sensor is at converting photons to electrons and hence the more sensitive the sensor is to capturing an image of something dim.
Global Shutter
Unlike the rolling shutter technology used in most CMOS cameras, a global shutter guarantees that the exposure time for the whole image area is uniform, beginning and ending at exactly the same time. This type of shutter is ideal for high precision applications. For high speed moving object and the atmospheric agitation the global shutter can generate undistorted imaging and realizes high picture quality.
FD Binning (Hardware Binning)
Unlike Most CMOS cameras, the camera supports charge-domain binning (FD Binning), which is the true hardware pixel binning similar to CCD cameras.
In the past, only CCD sensors were capable of hardware binning. Most CMOS cameras used digital binning, which relied on algorithms for binning. The disadvantage of this binning method (using 2*2 binning as an example) is that while the signal is amplified by 4 times, it also introduces twice the amount of noise, resulting in only a doubling of the signal-to-noise ratio, and then frame rate can not be improved. In contrast, hardware binning does not amplify additional noise, resulting in a direct 4-fold improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio. What’s more, the frame rate can increase a lot even the ROI function is not activited.
Universal Guiding Interface
The custom interfaces of the previous generation of planetary cameras and guiders has been replaced in the QHY5III (Ver.2) cameras with a more universal ST-4 compatible guiding interface. Now, even if the guiding cable is lost or damaged, you will be able to easily get a replacement on the market at a low cost.
