Gemini Telescope Design E.fric Friction Drive Mount
The design of the unique GTD E.fric Friction Drive Mount is based on the following important concepts.
- Small ecological footprint, achieved by using low waste factor tecnologies, like 3D printing, laser and waterjet cutting.
- The drive system can slew and track at high precision without encoder control. This ensures freedom at choosing/changing drive electronics and keeps the cost of ownership at a minimum as no expensive “out of warranty” repairs will be needed.
- High ergonomic and aesthetic value. You will find features like separable RA – DEC head, all internal cable routing up to the telescope, and some novel details like the adaptive azimuth pin support.
Why no encoders? Today most mounts have encoders all over them. Partly because they correct tracking and keep track of the position. However, there are very importand recent improvements of blind plate solving online, which means that you can recover the mount position within a few minutes. This fact made me decide to go against the current trend and create a mechanical design that offers arcsecond level tracking precision AND the high reliability associated with simplicity.
The control electronics are sold separately. You can use any programmable stepper driver with 1A or higher current output and microstepping capability. The mount can be shipped with your choice of controller programmed and verified. We recommend the Pulsar2 GoTo Controller.
