Gaius Mounting Hardware

The next thing to be aware of is the Gaius does not come with mounting hardware. This has to be ordered separately and comes in two versions. One is to mount on a Vixen or Losmandy dovetail plate and the second is one that fits a finder shoe.

GaiusS2 Review

I received my GaiusS2 a couple of days ago and have had the opportunity to become familiar with it. I will point out things I like and don't like about the unit. My first complaint is it doesn't come with an adapter to power it up. The power input is an XT30 plugin. The unit comes with a small yellow adapter pin with which you can create your own if you have some electronics skills. I had to order an adapter from Amazon. Here is the URL: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0H9HDGWSR?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title
Next you will need to be familiar with setting up a "Remote Desktop" connection on your computer. The instructions in the manual are not too clear.
The contacts for the temperature sensor inside the computer are very small and fragile. They can bend very easily if too much pressure is applied. I had to straighten mine out with a small screwdriver before the plug would fit. I would suggest leaving this plugged in all the time.
Having outlined the deficiencies with the unit I must say I am very pleased with my purchase. I bought the 16GigRAM and 256Gig SSD version and I am glad I did. All the software and updates I installed took up 52 Gigs of memory.
Although I have not installed on my mount as yet, I tested as many features as I possibly could and all functioned flawlessly. The wireless is stable but I am not yet at a distance.
I love having everything I need in one unit - first a Windows based system with which I can use NINA and Touch'n'Stars, (and all my other hardware), six 12 V power outlets, two programmable 12v ports for dew heaters and six USB ports - two USB3 and four USB2.
As for price - is the unit expensive? Yes and no. The cheapest Eagle is twice as expensive (that's before you even buy the cables to connect it which can cost $50 -$75 each!)
Are there other similar units - yes, but not Window's based, and not as fully functional. I'm a fan of NINA so Windows is a must!
I also run a MeLe Quieter 4C minicomputer on one of my rigs. It only had three USB ports so I had to install a multiport hub and a Pegasus Power box for my dew heaters.
Considering all this , would I buy the unit again - absolutely! I am thinking of buying another unit to replace the MeLe!
