Sightron Japan ALT-AZ Mount

Sightron Japan portable mount (SJ-M)

It provides great flexibility and can be operated in three different modes.

  • Conventional Alt-Azimuth
  • Single Fork
  • German Equatorial (requires an EQ Wedge)

With a maximum payload of 7kg and weighing only 1.45 kg, this highly portable mount is ideal for small to medium-sized telescopes.

Available in either black or silver anodising with a Vixen-style Saddle Clamp and two slow-motion handles.

This sturdy mount folds down to 240 x 80 x 90 mm, making it perfect for travel.

Movements are smooth and precise, enabling fine control of your telescope. 

A standard 3/8" tripod thread is situated on the base of the mount, thus ensuring its compatibility with a wide variety of tripods.

The Saddle Clamp can be removed to leave 2 x M6 threaded holes at 35mm centres.

This mount also has the advantage of operating in EQ mode, which, together with slow motion control, enables observation at high powers.

A mighty, well thought out and built mount for a grab & go setup.

I bought this Sightron Alt-Az mount for my Svbony Sv48p (also from astronomy plus). Combined with a carbon fiber tripod it makes a very portable/flyable package at 6kg. I am quite happy with both, but especially with the Sightron, as it is very easy to assemble and disassemble, which makes it very easy to pack, but at the same time very solid and stable. True, there are some quirks, actually one, the azimuth slowmotion is not ideally placed, but you can put it on the other side (it's a bit wonky, but it works fine for a grab & go set up) and I saw someone who just flipped the azimuth plate to get the control out of the way of the telescope when reaching for the zenith. That's the thing about this mount, it's very easy to adjust. Most importantly, the movements, both manually and with the slow-motion controls, are very smooth. If you're looking for an easy-to-carry mount with slow-motion controls and a reasonable payload, you don't really have much of a choice, but it doesn't matter because this mount checks all the boxes with flying colors.
