Smooth Running

Mount runs very quiet and carries my C9.25 with ease. I have only tested imaging with a Cat91. Guiding ranged from .5 - .7 total RMS, which is acceptable for that scope but have yet to see if this is good enough for C9.25. Polar alignment was a breeze. Two items of detriment are worth noting:
#1 - The USB C port on the saddle is not a USB hub. It works as an alternate USB connector to the mount. Convenient if you have a mini computer you want to ride on top of your scope. The saddle USB-C port is NOT a typical USB hub type connector, it will not pass through data from camera or other equipment to the mount's main USB port. If you want to mount your mini PC on tripod leg, or run using a PC you will have to run wires from the camera directly to the PC in addition to the cable run to the USB on the mount. Not what you'd expect from a mount with a saddle USB port.
2. Using the ZWO mount without a miniPC for visual use will be problematic. The ZWO Android software "Star Atlas" does not have a pointing model, or 3 star alignment routine. The software is a nice planetarium app with many objects you can "slew to". But without having the pointing or alignment to orient the mount in space, (typically provided by a hand controller), the odds of hitting your target are minimal.

Seems to me that ZWO wants you to run this mount with their ASI Air and have limited its ability for full functionality without it.

It is an upgrade!

The ZWO AM7 harmonic equatorial mount has a high payload capacity but weighs only 14.3 pounds. This makes it feasible, still, to go to a dark site with a heavy, long-focal-length imaging rig like an ASKAR 130PHQ and related gear.

This is the next step up from the AM5 and the principal benefit comes from its ability to handle payloads from 44 to 66 pounds, smoothly and accurately.

The main advantages:

High Payload-to-Weight Ratio: The mount head weighs approximately 14.3 lbs (6.5 kg) yet supports up to 44 lbs (20 kg) without counterweights and 66 lbs (30 kg) with counterweights installed.

Excellent Tracking & Guiding: Provides smooth, tight guiding with RMS error consistently around 0.4" to 0.8" even with a relatively large scope like mine. Of course, this rating also assumes clear skies; but when the temperature cooperates, I consistently get such RMS values even from a Bortle 9 metropolitan sky.

Integrated "Cable" Management: Built-in USB-C and DC 12V power ports directly on the dovetail saddle run wires through the mount, which greatly reduces cable snags and clutter. Of course, some cameras have their own requirements (especially when they offer dew heating, cooling and integrated guiding), so a separate power source may still be recommended rather than hitching a ride on the mount's. More on this below.

Full Latitude Adjustment: Supports a full 0° to 90° altitude range, making it adaptable to any location worldwide in both Equatorial (EQ) and Alt-Azimuth (Alt-Az) modes.

Connectivity: the AM7 offers several ways of integrating with other software: Bluetooth for the AM’s App (Sky Atlas), USB for Asiair, Wi-Fi for Asi585MC-Air or ASI2600MC-Air, and standard ASCOM/INDI drivers for other setups like NINA, etc.

Things to pay attention to:

Demands a Rigid Foundation: When carrying heavier payloads, lightweight tripods like the ZWO TC40 can become top-heavy. It is strongly recommended to pair it with a heavy-duty tripod or pier to prevent flexure or tipping risks. My recommendation for long refractors like mine is to use the Starfield PIER-1000B tripod (max capacity of 180 pounds!)

No Mechanical Brake on DEC Axis: While there is a built-in brake on the RA axis, there is none for the DEC axis; so be sure to properly “balance” any heavy or front-heavy payload.

Please note that unlike the AM5, this mount requires a slightly more capable power supply (12v 5A instead of 3A; it uses about 17A/20.4W instead of 2.1A/25.2W during high-speed slews). If you utilize the saddle pass-through, you will definitely want a reliable 12V 5A (or 8A) instead of 3A power supply to prevent under-voltage dropouts when slewing at full capacity.

Also, if you intend to add a counterweight, note that the arm and weights of the AM5 cannot be transferred to the AM7: it requires a bigger arm (M16 thread instead of M12) and related weights; the good news, at least, is that the arm is bundled with the mount.

Under high payloads, it is important to lock the altitude screws to avoid slight shifts during slew transitions. Note however that Zwo has eliminated the DEC and RA clutches found on the older AM5 model...

Like.comfortable pair of jeans.

I am wedded to the ZWO system, built around the ASIair, and in that context the AM7 is a mount that just works seamlessly, like a comfortable pair of jeans. It will replace my WD-20, which is in many ways a nicer mount, but does not work as easily with the ASIair or derivatives like the ASI2600mc Air. The AM7 is definitely as step up in quality from the first generation AM5 I owned. The AM7 ships with a larger diameter counterweight bar (25mm) than the AM5 or WD-20 (20mm) so consider ordering a CW for the Skywatcher EQ6 which has the larger 25mm hole.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review for the ZWO AM7 Harmonic Drive Equatorial Mount. We are glad to hear that you find it as seamless and reliable as a comfortable pair of jeans. We understand the importance of compatibility and are happy to hear that it works well with your ASIair system. We appreciate your feedback. Thank you for choosing ZWO and happy stargazing!
